What a weekend, huh? If it wasn’t so sad and totally unnecessary, it would have been funny. What I want to know is just how often do ordinary Americans, patriotic Americans have to get off of the couch, grab a sign, and have to go somewhere in large numbers to get the attention of The Cheeto Prophet.
This is what happens when you have a Banana Republic Bozo trying to rule by force of will. In a third world country maybe, but in the good old U.S. of A., we don’t roll that way. I caught a great headline or teaser yesterday, I don’t remember where it was from, but it said “This is what happens when a populist tries to govern without a populace”. Truer words were never spoken.
I am not going to re-litigate the entire weekend here. But the federal court rulings to bar people who had legitimate green cards or legally issued visas from being deported from the US upon entry was a cold water douche to the Trump administration. Cue the inevitable outraged response from the spoiled Day Glo two year old. Screw the stupid courts, the order stands as published. Fine, make your stand. But count on other, more broad lawsuits on other aspects of your illegal EO.
Steve Clemons, the Washington editor of the Atlantic magazine had a great insight last night. On Saturday there was one of the endless Washington hoi polloi social events. At an after event, Clemons stated that several already appointed to the administration, as well as several appointees awaiting confirmation looked at this, to quote, as “A Keystone Kops operation”. So much for loyalty, huh?
Look, let’s just set the protests off to the side for the moment. You can always tell that you’re carrying a broken down suitcase when all of your stuff starts falling out. And as every hour goes by, and more and more constituent pressure has started to build on GOP legislators, more and more of them have been coming out against the EO. It was expected that Democratic opinion would be one of universal condemnation for this latest outrage. But when GOP legislators start bowing to public pressure, and questioning not only the wisdom, but the legality of the order, “Houston, we have a problem”.
Simple fact. The administration of the Tiny Thumbed Diktator has had more than 48 hours to straighten this mess out. Instead, like a turtle, they chose to draw their heads back inside of their shell, and just tough it out. Just like in the campaign, never give in, never concede, double down instead. And yesterday night, on a Sunday, the brand, spanking new Secretary of Homeland Security had to come out with a statement that in his position, the allowance of people from the quarantined countries with valid green card, permanent residence status was in the national interest. Finally, at least one voice of sanity in the asylum.
Hey, Donnie Boy, as our new Embarrassment in Chief,, you have wide powers. But you are still subject to control and restraint by both the legislative, and the judicial branches of our precious government. Here’s a helpful hint from Murflouise. Stop letting speechwriters and neo-Nazi Leninists write your Executive Orders for you! Ask a lawyer or two to help you, and check with the departments that will be affected by your lunacy as to how to get it done. You’re already loathed enough, do you want to be considered as criminally stupid too?
