Mushroom Hike
We had the opportunity today to join a hike sponsored by Landpaths, a non-profit organization which manages publicly acquired land. We’ve gone on many hikes with them through the years. This was at the Bohemia Ecological Preserve, about 10 miles from our home. It is roughly 1,000 acres and lies from 100 to 1,000 feet above sea level. It was a beautiful day and we had about 25 people there.
We gathered near the bottom and those with trucks gave us rides to near the top. Some folks noticed my DLY KOS license plate and said they read it every day.
This is the environment, heavily treed with steep trails, oak, and firs and bay.
Our guide learned his craft on the east coast, New England. For him it was warm so he hiked barefoot! He named each type with the latin names and I just listened and didn’t memorize.
We got back late so I will just show photos of what we found.
This guy claimed a steep hill and cut mushroom off the trunk.
It was this, which our guide said helped to kill that tree.
Some of the roughly 40 types we found.
At the end the guide shoed us two interesting hats.
This hat was made from mushroom-dyed yarn.
This hat was made from actual mushrooms, 100%.
