According to a Reuters article today, Myron Ebell, who headed Trump's EPA transition team confirmed Trump plans to back out of the 2015 Paris Agreement to cut greenhouse gas emissions around the globe.
“He could do it by executive order tomorrow or he could do it as part of a larger package," Ebell told reporters in London on Monday.
If there is any good news in the article, it’s that it apparently takes 4 years for any country that has ratified the agreement to withdraw. Of course that probably doesn’t mean much to Trump & Friends, and I’m sure they would have no qualms about unilaterally declaring all emission standards and goals in the agreement no longer apply to the U.S. from this moment forward.
Ebell said the "cleanest way" would be to withdraw from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change itself.
"Whether the U.N. secretariat wants the U.S. to continue to have a seat at the table is up to them. I don't think Trump cares about that. The people who elected him would prefer not to have a seat at the table," Ebell said.
The people who elected him? That would be 27% of eligible voters, or 3 million fewer voters than who voted for Hillary Clinton. I don’t know what to say. In less than two weeks, I feel like the whole world is turned upside down. I’m hoping the Women’s March and the promised Scientists March are the beginnings of our own version of the Arab Spring. Sign me up for a Climate Change march.
Trump’s America is not the America the Greatest Generation fought for. It’s not the America represented by the Statue of Liberty. It’s not the America of our Constitution. If there’s going to be a fight, I’m ready to get in the ring.
