Received this e-mail today from U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren (D. MA):
Tonight on the Senate floor, I tried to read a speech that Senator Ted Kennedy gave in 1986, opposing Jeff Session’s judicial nomination.
Then I tried to read a moving letter that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s widow, Coretta Scott King, wrote in 1986. A letter that says: “It is my strongly-held view that the appointment of Jefferson Sessions to the federal bench would irreparably damage the work of my husband.”
I tried to read Mrs. King’s letter – until Mitch McConnell silenced me for “impugning” Jeff Sessions.
Let me be clear: I will not be silent about a nominee for Attorney General of the United States who has made derogatory and racist comments that have no place in our justice system.
And I will not be silent while the Republicans rubber stamp an Attorney General who will never stand up to President Trump when he violates the Constitution or breaks the law.
Mitch McConnell and the Senate Republicans think they can silence us – but we WILL make our voices heard. Add your name to mine to say NO to Jeff Sessions.
Tonight, Mitch McConnell silenced Mrs. King’s voice on the Senate floor - and silenced the voices of millions more Americans who are afraid and appalled by what's happening in our country.
We may be silenced on the Senate floor – but we keep speaking out.
Thanks for being a part of this,
Elizabeth
P.S. I hope that you will read and share the letter that Coretta Scott King wrote to the Senate Judiciary Committee in 1986 about Jeff Sessions. Mitch McConnell may not want to hear it, but it's powerfully important.
