Okay, so the powerful Office of Management and Budget is not the sexiest part of the government. And the budget director, who leads the OMB, is not a household name. But watch out, because Trump’s choice for this position, Mick Mulvaney, wants to make drastic changes and so far his consideration for the position is flying under the radar. If he is approved, Republicans will be much closer to achieving their wet dream of destroying the social safety net, including Medicare and the venerable Social Security.
Mulvaney is currently a Republican representative from South Carolina. He belongs to the Tea Party and helped found the ultra-conservative House Freedom Caucus. Mulvaney has voted in the House to shut the government down rather than raise the federal debt limit. He has characterized Social Security as a Ponzi scheme and has said that Medicare as we know it must be ended, both he claimed in the effort to keep the programs “solvent.”
Mulvaney does have a problem, however. From a 1/24/17 Politico article:
Mulvaney’s nomination is most vulnerable over his admission that he didn’t pay more than $15,000 in taxes for his triplets’ nanny from 2000 to 2004. He told the Senate Budget Committee that he learned of the failure to pay taxes during the confirmation review process and then paid what he owed in federal taxes. State taxes and any penalties have yet to be determined.
Call your Senators today and urge them to vote against Mulvaney’s confirmation.
