I really, really don’t want to tempt Mother Nature and the other gods on this note buuuuuuut…
I can’t deny the occasional chuckle as the weather reports of the nor'easter from a couple of days ago are all over the news and have been talked about even here in the comment sections here at TGOS.
In the meantime, Chicago weather guru Tom Skilling (yes, the younger brother of Jeffrey Skilling of Enron fame) gives us this lowdown on Chicago’s rather unusual winter this year.
We're more than three-quarters through the heart of winter — mid-December through mid-February — and Chicago has had an extremely rare midseason snow drought.
The official Chicago observing site at O'Hare International Airport has recorded just 0.6 inches of snow since Dec. 19, making this the second least snowfall during that time period since snow records began here in 1884. The only time less snow fell during this midwinter period was 117 years ago, during the winter of 1899-1900, when just 0.3 inches of snow was recorded.
Nor has Chicago seen any snowfall since that February 2 report.
The Chicago area has, on the whole, been having milder winters lately (though not this mild) so that’s not what’s strange bout this winter.
What is strange is that when I visited my family in Michigan during the Christmas, it did not snow very much but there was snow piled in some places that was taller than me (and I’m 5’7”)...we simply haven’t seen that much snow in Chicago for the entire winter.
It does seem as if areas like Wisconsin, Indiana, and Michigan have been hit with snow much harder than the northeastern corner of the Land of Lincoln...and that is very unusual.
And then there’s the 7-10 day outlook
No snow being forecast in even the immediate outlooks. Zip. Zada. None.
As I was walking down the street talking to a buddy, yesterday, we began talking about it then we STFU right away! Because we know...we know! that we could be talking up this:
or even this:
So...I’m saying NOTHING! Nor will I gloat!
(But I do wonder if Mother Nature put some sort of weather force field around the area...and does The Occupant in the Oval Office dare to even fool with Mother Nature’s natural force field?)
Today’s question: How’s the winter treating your area? Is it a usual or an unusual winter?
