I grew up in Michigan, a kind of meat and potato’s place. For dinner we had meat, potato’s, a vegetable, salad and a stack of white bread on the table next to the butter. Yum!
My mother made everything from scratch. She had a meat grinder thing that she made some awful kind of sandwich spread with. In those days kids ate what was in front of them or they didn’t eat. I was pretty thin.
My mother died when I was 8 and for a brief and wondrous period of time we had bologna sandwiches with mustard and Kool-Aid every day for lunch and TV dinners every night. My dad would actually go the grocery store and fill up a whole shopping cart with frozen TV dinners.
He soon remarried; to a woman who did not know how to cook and nothing was homemade. Mashed potato’s came out of a box. The meat was always overcooked but no one dared to ask for ketchup to put on it. I became a vegetarian quite young.
The only out of ordinary things I ate was when I was at my grandmothers. She came to the US from Scotland in her late 20’s. At her house we had scones and shortbread and soft boiled eggs in little cups. You’d knock the top off delicately with a knife and eat the egg with a spoon.
I married a guy from Biloxi and visiting his relatives was quite strange for me. Dinner would be fresh caught shrimp, boiled and poured out onto newspaper on the table. Today I would go nuts for that, but I was very young then and confused about where the potatoes and salad were.
Now, as a middle aged adult in the South, I eat a variety of foods. Korean and Vietnamese are my favorite types of food, but I eat quite simply. Today I had yoghurt and a tortilla with almond butter and lot's of grapes and melon.
I was never a real big fan of spam, but sliced thin enough and fried, I likes it with mustard on white bread.
