How did you fare the day after St. Valentine’s Day?
Really, I’m not a grumpy hater. I swear it. I’m pro romance (some of my best friends are romantics), but after last week’s Valentine’s Day I can no longer support that nefarious holiday. The day after it I came across many wounded personal relationships. One or two are still reeling from it.
Corporations over the years have at times demonstrated a blatant disregard for the health and welfare of our citizenry. Nowhere has this been more obvious (IMHO) than in the devious creation of the St. Valentine’s Day holiday in order to sell gift cards. Since no one can live up to expectations on Valentine’s Day the same crafty card companies also have a post St. Valentine’s Day spike in “I’m Sorry” cards. They get you coming and going.
How many relationships have come to wreck on the treacherous shoals of this infernal holiday?
These are some of the stories I had to hear about from friends and coworkers this year:
-The “unidentified” ring in the drink...without an explanation of what it is for….
-The day after let down….
-Hearing the stories of how other couples celebrated more romantically….
-Depression from not being in a relationship….
-Depression from being in a relationship you wish to God you weren’t in….
-Feeling like an old curmudgeon because you don’t give a damn about the holiday (me).
I hate to admit it, but I must confess I did have some real (borrowed) moments of joy this Valentine’s Day. I was seating couples (many of whom were soon to be squabbling) for an hour when two kids walked in. They could’ve been anywhere from 14-17, but they both had that awkward look of never having been on a date before. I mean they really, really seemed sheepishly uncomfortable walking in. I had a special table set up with roses and photos of couples of all genders and ethnicities, but the folks who reserved it never showed (probably fought on the way over and just turned the car around).
When the girl saw the table I was giving them she smiled the largest smile I have ever seen, and her face turned beet red. She stayed that way for at least 20 minutes. I blushed when I saw how much she was blushing. So did other employees and customers.
The boy with her was so emboldened by the continual look of joy on her face that after a while he stumbled (yup, he actually stumbled) out of his booth seat to move across the table to sit next to her. A coworker told me she could hear his heart pounding from twenty feet away.
“They go to my school,” said our youngest employee. “They’ve been going out for like forever, two years.” Spoilsport. Nonetheless, I’m sure they fought the next day anyways.
