This new CBS poll demonstrates something we really need to be aware of. The absolute craziness and total lack of any principles by GOP voters can severely distort certain questions on polls. First let’s look at the top lines of the poll.
Sixty-one percent of Republicans now say the economy is good, a jump of 30 points since December… A majority of Democrats think the economy is in good shape, although the percentage has dipped from 78 percent to 67 percent.
...
When Americans are asked to name the most important problem for the President and Congress to address this year, immigration is the top answer, cited by 15 percent.
...
Forty-three percent of Republicans support requiring illegal immigrants to leave the country; Seventy-nine percent of Democrats think they should be allowed to apply for citizenship, as do 60 percent of independents.
The thing to remember about all polls is that members of the GOP are simply sheep and will respond exactly the way the right wing propaganda machine tells them to respond. Or they’ll simply answer any question that leaves a positive impression for Trump and the GOP.
So whenever you see a poll question about what “Americans” think, keep in mind it is not actually measuring any kind of a thought out opinion. It’s measuring the automatic response of some 35% of the population that is responding the way they know the GOP wants them to respond. This distorts the thinking public’s view of what policies are actually of concern to America. 35% will automatically oppose anything the Democrats propose, even if it is destructive to their self interest.
Don’t ever believe the results you see on these policy questions are reflective of the voters who can actually change elections.
