I’ve seen a few negative responses to talk about getting rid of Trump with the Article 26 relievement of duties clause, that Pence is as bad or maybe even worse.
I submit a few counter realities. The damage Trump is doing, not could do, is currently doing is unacceptable. The things the GOP has done is bad enough, but what they are contemplating that they haven’t gotten to yet is horrendous.
Actually getting rid of Trump sends a huge raft of messages, that the american people are not going to put up with this GOP bullshit. Not just Trump, but the GOP
- Pence will come in with a degree of caution, the GOP will mirror that to some degree. They are passing onerous bills at a furious pace because they feel it can be credited to Trump’s doing. Remove Trump and they are forced to own anything they do.
- They will be forced to govern with a sense of responsibility, new rules that have an eye toward behavior that attempts to play well for the mid term elections.
- It creates a “grace” period, a period of sorting out all of the scandal investigations that are being obstructed now. This opens the door to doing investigations right, openly and going after anyone caught in the mess. And that includes going after those who have obstructed investigations.
- It invalidates everything Trump did, including cabinet appointments. That opens a window into new rules for confirmations, not new rules, but adhering to the tried and true rules McConnell stated so succinctly as applied to Obama’s nominations. We might see somewhat better appointments as a result, we can hope.
- It sends a message about Trump’s executive orders, the ones that sent messages to states and agencies that it was okay to undermine and gut the things the GOP doesn’t like. It curbs the disregard we were seeing for the laws of the land.
- This change would likely change the course of the US/Russian relationship, the one that Trump has is headed for is a pure disaster waiting to happen. Foreign relations can be set on a better track than Trump has us on.
- Blowing up investigations will have Trump campaign and advisory staff scrambling to provide evidence for immunity deals. The GOP will be scrambling like the vermin they are for safe places to hide, which will create a new kind of cooperative attitude.
The bottom line is that it slows things down, gives a window to establish some sanity into our democracy. No republican president is okay as long as the GOP has the lunatic agenda it does, but getting rid of Trump sends hardcore warnings to the GOP, and it changes the narrative and execution of investigations into Russian interference.
This country and our democracy needs a chance to slow things down and gain some equilibrium, things have been going way to fast to keep up with them, it is governing by chaotic and uncontrolled rushes into senseless changes, that needs to be slowed down, and that is what removing Trump as president does.
Pence is not more of the same of even worse.
