Governor Cuomo is gearing up to make a run for the nomination, but make no mistake about it, he'd be a terrible candidate and an even worse president.
He's made a big policy show. He's going to do a lot of infrastructure here. He's got his way in the corrupt morass that is Albany. He's checked all the social issues boxes. He's even going to spread around some cash here in my neighborhood and around Central Brooklyn. All good.
What he can't get around is the fact that he's a terrible candidate. He has almost zero charisma. He's a terrible public speaker, quite far from dear old dad in his abilities. He's corrupt (you can't do anything in Albany and not get dirty - comes with the territory). He looks terrible, almost sickly. His family life is different (err... Kwanzaa Cake). He is completely disconnected from the popular culture. Finally, he's got a lot of enemies and not very many friends. In New York, he's hated by some, tolerated by most, loved by none. There just isn't much here to build a presidential campaign on.
Now, he's going to sell that he's been a good governor, which is mostly true. In New York, that's setting the bar pretty low as our last few governors have been truly awful and Albany is rife with criminal convictions under Cuomo's tenure. It is true that he's made Albany, corrupt as it is, function like a normal state capitol. But that's not nearly enough to make a president.
I'm not committed to anyone at this point in the cycle but I can say for certain that Cuomo is a definite NO.
