The practice was catastrophic for the species. The global population of blue whales once numbered in the hundreds of thousands, but by 1966, when the International Whaling Commission introduced a hunting ban, it had been pushed to near extinction. “Next to the bison, there was never a bigger slaughter of a single species,” says Dave Ireland, managing director of biodiversity at the rom [sic]. In the northwest Atlantic, for a reason not yet identified, the blue whale population has fallen to roughly 200, and it isn’t growing. According to that estimate, the 2014 freeze in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence wiped out nearly 5 percent of an already imperilled [sic] population.
As you can see by Itzl's concerned look, this group is for us to check in and to let people know we are alive, doing OK,and not affected by things such as heat, blizzards, floods wild fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, power
outages, etc., that could keep us off DKos. It's also so we can find other Kossacks nearby for in-person checks when other methods of communication fail - a buddy system. Members come here to check in. If you are going to be away from your computer for a day or a week, let us know here. We care!
We have split up the publishing duties, but we welcome everyone in IAN to do daily diaries for the group! The result goes a long way to rewriting the historical and socio-political message of the Mercator map, which exaggerates the size of imperialist powers.
“This is the start of a three-year effort to decolonize the curriculum in our public schools,” said Colin Rose, assistant superintendent of opportunity and achievement gaps for Boston public schools.
The district has 125 schools and 57,000 students, 86% of whom are non-white, with the largest groups being Latino and black. After changing the maps, Rose said, educators plan to look at other subjects and shift away from presenting white history as the dominant perspective.
Review of the new movie:
Beauty and the Beast and The Hunchback of Notre Dame have more than a few things in common. Both started off as stories — La Belle et La Bête was written by Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve in 1740, and Victor Hugo published Notre-Dame de Paris in 1831. Both were turned into beloved Disney animated movies in 1991and 1996, respectively. Both feature two of Disney's most realistically terrifying villains, in the forms of misogynistic Gaston and xenophobic Judge Frollo. And it turns out that thanks to a design detail in the new live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast, both films may actually exist in the same universe.
