Some signs I just know are going to stay up for awhile, so I try to keep them relatively modest. When you do this as much as I do, you can afford to skip the usual polemics. It’s in an almost-but-not-quite-sealed overpass over Interstate 10 between La Brea and Crenshaw, under which some 300,000 cars pass on the weekdays. The entrance is pretty well hidden, but you could find it in a few minutes if you were looking for it. Caltrans has a key, but like most of our government and infrastructure services, they’re generally undermanned and pretty busy with more important things. And besides, the President actually does seem kind of weird about Russia.
About a mile east there’s another shut-down pedestrian walkway, at 8th St.: another one of my favorites. Each square is about 9’ x 9’ and I use it for the really large signs, like this:
A dozen years or so ago, back in the bad old Bush days, it even had a working light in the middle, which made for some awesome night-time visuals.
This time I went for a more patriotic theme:
I’m not crazy about LA - too many cars and not nearly enough in the way of parks and natural beauty of the SF bay area. Nevertheless, I had a fairly good week just knowing those signs were there speaking for me to some 8 to 10,000 cars per hour - during the daylight anyway. I’d go crazy if I had to accept all this crap and not be able to speak up. Before I left I decided to change the sign a bit and give all those people something different to think about for awhile:
On my way back north I was hoping this sign I’d left along the 5 would still be up, but alas…
