I’ve been working at my current company for almost 17 years now; coming up on 11 years on my current team. It was a lot of fun and very interesting in the beginning, but after over a decade I’m kinda burnt out and wanting to do something different. Sadly, the one team that held promise has been reorg’d, and their role/job function is about to change to something I’m not really qualified for. I’m not a fan of my current boss or one of my co-workers either, which of course doesn’t make it easier to continue on my current team. So, tonight, I have some songs about work and how I feel about it.
Johnny Paycheck — Take this Job and Shove It:
[Refrain] Take this job and shove it
I ain't working here no more
My woman done left and took all the reasons
I was working for
You better not try to stand in my way
'Cause I'm walkin' out the door
Take this job and shove it
I ain't working here no more
I been workin' in this factory
For nigh on fifteen years
All this time I watched my woman
Drownin' in a pool of tears
And I've seen a lot of good folks die
That had a lot of bills to pay
I'd give the shirt right offa' my back
If I had the guts to say
[Refrain]
Well that foreman, he's a regular dog
The line boss, he's a fool
Got a brand new flattop haircut
Lord, he thinks he's cool
One of these days I'm gonna' blow my top
And that sucker, he's gonna' pay
Lord I can't wait to see their faces
When I get the nerve to say
[Refrain]
Take this job and shove it
Dolly Parton — 9 to 5
Tumble outta bed and I stumble to the kitchen
Pour myself a cup of ambition
Yawn and stretch and try to come to life
Jump in the shower and the blood starts pumpin'
Out on the street the traffic starts jumpin'
With folks like me on the job from 9 to 5
[Refrain] Workin' 9 to 5, what a way to make a livin'
Barely gettin' by, it's all takin' and no givin'
They just use your mind and they never give you credit
It's enough to drive you crazy if you let it
9 to 5, for service and devotion
You would think that I would deserve a fat promotion
Want to move ahead but the boss won't seem to let me
I swear sometimes that man is out to get me!
They let you dream just to watch 'em shatter
You're just a step on the boss-man's ladder
But you got dreams he'll never take away
You're in the same boat with a lotta your friends
Waitin' for the day your ship'll come in
An' the tide's gonna turn and it's all gonna roll your way
[Refrain]
9 to 5, yeah they got you where they want you
There's a better life, and you dream about it, don't you?
It's a rich man's game no matter what they call it
And you spend your life puttin' money in his wallet
[Refrain]
9 to 5, yeah they got you where they want you
There's a better life, and you dream about it, don't you?
It's a rich man's game no matter what they call it
And you spend your life puttin' money in his wallet
9 to 5, working 9 to 5
Steve Savitzky — The Mushroom Song
Now everybody knows that engineers are lazy slobs
They dress in dirty T-shirts and complain about their jobs
But Management has found a way to make them toe the mark:
You feed them bits of bullshit, and you keep them in the dark!
because they're
[Refrain] Mushrooms, Mushrooms, keep them in the dark
Mushrooms, Mushrooms, I heard the boss remark
You feed them bits of bullshit til they can't take any more
When they stick their heads up cut them off and ship them out the door
An engineer told his manager, “This project is the pits,
A stinking crock of horse manure that gives me nauseous fits,”
The manager went to his boss and passed the word along,
“It's a pot of fertilizer and its smell is awfully strong.”
It comes from...
[Refrain]
The word it traveled quickly 'til it reached the CEO,
The VP told him gladly “This is stuff that makes things grow,
It's packaged in ceramic and it's very strong indeed;
I think that you'll agree that it's exactly what we need.”
It's made with...
[Refrain]
The CEO went to the board and said to them, “You know,
This substance has the power to make our business grow!”
They had the news that evening on the business TV shows:
“The company is growing and it's smelling like a rose!”
They're growing...
[Refrain]
The engineer he heard the news and muttered, “It's a crime
How other guys get all the nifty projects all the time.
We have a real disaster here that just won't go away
'Cause noone ever listens to a single word we say!
Because we're...
[Refrain]
And while I know it’s not Monday, the sentiment in this song still speaks to me:
Mark Chesnutt — It Sure is Monday
With the alarm clock tingling, ringin' in my head,
I woke up dog tired, beat down half dead.
Tryin' to recover from a another wild weekend,
chuggin' down the coffee when I should've been sleepin'
Well, it sure its Monday, isn't it now.
Gotta get myself through the week some how.
I had a ball Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
But it's all over now and it sure is Monday.
Oh, I got to the job site at a quarter past nine
And somehow I stayed awake until lunch time.
Then I caught a little nap, stretched out in the truck bed,
My feet still twitchin' to the music in my head.
It sure is Monday, ain't it the truth?
I partied too hard, now I'm payin' my dues.
I had a ball Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
But's it's all over now and it sure is Monday.
Well, it sure its Monday, isn't it now.
Gotta get myself through the week some how.
I had a ball Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
But it's all over now and it sure is Monday.
Well, it sure is Monday.
yeah, it's all over now and it sure is Monday.
It sure is Monday, ain't it a sin?
I gotta work my way through the week again.
I had a ball Friday, Saturday and Sunday
But it's all over now and it sure is Monday
Kitchen Table Kibitzing is a community series for those who wish to share part of the evening around a virtual kitchen table with readers of Daily Kos who aren’t throwing pies at one another. Drop by and tell us about your weather, your garden, or what you cooked for supper. Newcomers may notice that many who post diaries and comments in this series already know one another to some degree, but we welcome guests at our kitchen table, and hope to make some new friends as well.
As always, this is an open thread and nothing is off topic. What do you want to kibitz about tonight?
