Why doesn’t *everyone* know about the incredible campaign going on right now in Wichita? Kansas District 4, right in the heart of Koch-brother country, is getting ready for the APRIL 11th special election to fill Mike Pompeo’s House seat.
And despite what the pundits might predict, Wichita is turning out to be ground zero for a fired-up grassroots resistance. We have James Thompson, a terrific candidate who is knocking every door and turning up at every community event to listen to his constituents. He’s built an organized and energetic base that should be garnering headlines nationwide. The DNC and the DCCC apparently decided not to bother with this race, and despite progressive calls for a 50 state approach, they appear to be willing to write off the heartland entirely. But the Kos community should know better. If we learned only one thing in 2016, surely it was that a powerful candidate who can connect with his base means more than a hundred tired polls.
Of course, there are some groups that noticed something was going down in Wichita. Just last week, Thompson picked up the support of the Bernie-powered Our Revolution, and progressive democrats — or really, any democrats who like winning — are rallying around his feisty, scrappy campaign.
And you should too. Because James is a fighter: he worked his way up out of poverty, even a brief stint of homelessness when his father was unemployed. He often traces his future success to the opportunities provided him by a great public school teacher and his time serving in the military. He spent his career as a civil rights attorney fighting for people in his community. And now he will fight for us, so that our children, even those raised in difficult circumstances, can have the same opportunities he did growing up: access to affordable health care and excellent public schools. A stable economy that works for the workers. A clean environment.
Of course, the Kochs and the abysmal Kansas governor Brownback are throwing their billions towards Thompson’s do-nothing Republican opponent. A guy who doesn’t even seem to want the job, who refused to show up at any of the scheduled debates, and who appears to lack a single innovative idea regarding how to stabilize the Kansas economy or bring jobs back to the state.
I wish the DCCC could get on board, because it’s a huge mistake to count out Thompson and his Army — these guys are tearing it up out there, and they have heart, and they could pull this thing off, or die trying. But if we can’t have DNC and DCCC support, we will just have to do it without them.
