I remember watching the WH Correspondents’ Dinner the night that Obama dropped the mic on DJT.
I remember thinking BHO had great lines and great comic timing, wondering if the best comedians in the country were giving him material.
I remember unsmiling reaction shots of DJT, thinking it has been a long time since he was in a roast situation where he didn’t have control over the content.
But I didn’t think the routine was so devastating that it would lead to all this.
Pundit after pundit has suggested that night of “humiliation” was the reason DJT decided to run for president.
Seriously?
All this horror of the DJT administration is just his attempt at payback for the black guy (and Seth Meyers, who was awesome that night) making fun of him?
That makes no sense unless you try to think like a narcissist. In that context, those relatively tame jokes would be blown up into something yuge. The whole room was laughing at him. The whole television audience was laughing at him. The routine lives on through YouTube and google cache is forever and everyone who watches those clips is laughing at him.
Being mocked is one of the most devastating things in the world for a personality like that. He takes himself SO seriously. Anyone dismissing him as ridiculous will get his hackles up.
So he ran for president and he won* and that’ll show them, right?
Wrong.
What for most men would be the capstone of a life and career is actually going to be an even greater opportunity for humiliation.
If he had not run for president, he would have just been an eccentric, self-centered, money-grubbing, pussy-grabbing, crass, tasteless, B-list reality TV personality.
The Apprentice had dropped from being a top ten show to not even making the top 100. C and D list celebrities could not pull in viewers for Celebrity Apprentice. He got more press from his political rantings and suddenly he realized that was an easy way to get people to notice him.
He could have maintained his following in Right Blogistan on the strength of the birther movement and his attacks on Democrats and women and minorities and immigrants; he would have been a much sought-after endorser and donor among tpotty Republicons; but generally he would have stayed a forgettable fringe character in terms of national and international opinion. His rantings would occasionally make the news but no one with any sense would take him seriously.
But now that he holds the nuclear codes and the fate of the entire planet in his hands, he has unwittingly turned a spotlight on his deficiencies.
Now the whole world knows how ignorant he is. How unsophisticated he is. How unhinged he is.
He accuses BHO of a crime without evidence. He accuses Susan Rice of a crime without evidence. He defends fellow sexual predator Bill O’Reilly. He has never said a negative word about a ruthless dictator like Putin because they both like the same baroque gold-plated gilt-edged furnishings.
Instead of the presidency bringing him adulation and respect, it has exposed him as a fraud: not as wealthy as he claims, not a good businessman, not smart.
His grandiose claims of what he could do as POTUS are being shown to be empty promises if not outright lies.
World leaders are testing him and his tough talk is turning out to be toothless. (Hmmm, this may turn out to be a fortunate outcome, since the last thing we want is a new war under his command.)
Even his supporters are deserting him in droves.
The emperor has no clothes.
Now the entire country is laughing at him. Now the entire world is laughing at him.
But saddest of all, when it comes to narcissistic supply, negative attention is just as good.
Being despised by the world still means the whole world is paying attention to him. Still means he is the center of attention. That’s why the Time Person of the Year was so perfect. Being the person with the most impact on the news in the previous year does not mean the most positive impact on the news.
So while he doesn’t like it when we make fun of his tiny hands, he would like it even less if we ignored him.
He ran for president to keep from being ignored.
Similar to the publicity-seeking behavior of the Frumious Coultersnatch, DJT acts as though any attention is better than no attention. Every now and then, do something completely outrageous, the more outrageous the better. Anything goes so long as it keeps your name in the press and your face on TV. Anything to sell papers and magazines. Anything for ratings.
DJT ran for president just to test his marketing ability. I’ll begrudgingly give him that, although we may never know how much of his win was fueled by Russian interference.
But marketing an inferior product just proves people are gullible, not that the product is good. Millions of people eat at McDonald’s every day even though the food is terrible. Someone made a lot of money by figuring out how to sell a small disc of meat, a flat tasteless bun, a few pennies worth of potatoes, grease and salt, and a cheap plastic toy by labeling it a “happy meal” and marketing it to children and their harried parents.
DJT “winning” the presidency is the same level of marketing “achievement”, and deserves no admiration.
My fervent wish is that the people who have hitched their wagon to his star go down in infamy with him.
He doesn’t care whom he destroys, so he won’t care who goes down with the DJT ship. He won’t care about being labeled the worst president ever. He still gets to be part of that exclusive 44 man group and get his name in the history books.
But remember that Nixon went from winning 49 states in 1972 to resigning barely one step ahead of impeachment and removal in 1974 to almost no one being willing to admit having voted for him in 1976.
People with normal emotional functioning who don’t want to be the laughingstock of the world, who don’t feel that negative attention is just as good as positive attention, will bear the brunt of DJT’s eventual disgrace.
This is my prophetic hope: I want every single one of them to pay the strongest possible price in terms of having their career and credibility destroyed. We have to primary them, run against them, fund their opponents, protest businesses that hire them, and basically remind them at every turn that we outnumber them. After this is over, none of them should ever be taken seriously again, and be laughed out of every political, business or consulting venue in every possible field of work for the rest of their lives. After this is over, people will be embarrassed to admit they ever worked for him, voted for him, believed a word he said or supported him in any way.
The DJT brand will be irretrievably in the tank, no one anywhere will lend him money, people will run from buildings and ventures with his name attached, he will be a reliable political punchline for the rest of his life, and his children will have to get real jobs.
It couldn’t happen to a nicer guy.
what a fool believes he sees, no wise man has the power to reason away
