It’s pretty common for me to be searching for a topic for the Wednesday CUA on Tuesday night. I usually have something in mind, but I was beginning to feel like a cat on a hot tin roof. Well, a suggestion did come in, thanks to Kossack (and pet lover) thurayya. In the pootie diary (okay, it was a bunny diary), I mentioned to samanthab that I was still hunting for a topic. I went out on the prowl (okay, it was an ultimate frisbee game), and, dog my cats, when I returned home, there was this comment from thurayya:
How about cat idioms? You could accompany it with your latest pic of Noble Fur.
Okay, why not? She even included a link to thefreedictionary.com, where I could peruse cat sayings. Some are very familiar, others are new to me.
Most of us know these idioms:
Fat cat, cat on a hot tin roof, fighting like cats and dogs, fraidy cat, look what the cat dragged in, and the liberals’ favorite, herding cats.
But here are some more intriguing sayings...
Conceited as a barber’s cat (not sure why that profession breeds conceited cats; maybe they hear all the local gossip and think they know it all).
As much of a chance as a wax cat in hell (refreshing change from the snowball, since it got co-opted by climate change deniers).
Faster than a cat lapping chain lightning (I like that one).
A cat can look at a king. Definition: No one is so important that an ordinary person cannot look at him or her; everyone has the right to be curious about important people.
Fight like Kilkenny cats (refers to an Irish fable, and means to fight nearly to the death).
It’s raining cats and dogs (we have heard that part), and pitchforks and hammer handles. There are also racist versions to that saying, which I heard as a young lad.
Like a cat on hot bricks (as a substitute for the tin roof).
And there are many more. Feel free to check out the full list at thefreedictionary.com and give ‘em a bit of traffic. As always, this is an open thread. Tell us your favorite pet sayings, or be a stray and wander off to any topic that you wish.
