Received this e-mail today from U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar’s (D. MN) re-election campaign:
Like many of you, I was horrified by the video of a passenger being dragged off of a United Airlines flight. This outrageous incident shouldn’t have happened, plain and simple.
After years of studying this issue and meeting with concerned travelers, I worked with my colleagues to pass the Airline Passenger Bill of Rights in 2012 to help ensure that travelers are treated with the dignity they deserve. That law required that passengers trapped on the tarmac have access to food, water, and medical attention.
After this terrible incident, it’s clear that we must do more to protect passengers.
As your senator, I’ve been fighting to strengthen consumer protections, and this incident shows there is still much more we must do to help airline passengers in Minnesota and across America. Will you add your name if you agree that we need more protections for airline passengers?
While I believe airlines need wide latitude when it comes to addressing safety issues, in a non-safety situation like overbooking, travelers should not be denied their rights or dignity. We can’t let what happened here become the norm. That's why I've called on the Senate Commerce Committee to examine current protections and needed improvements.
Enacting the Airline Passenger Bill of Rights wasn’t easy. It took years of advocacy by outraged consumers and bipartisan action in Congress, but we got it done.
Now we need to do it again. Because what happened on the United flight is unacceptable. And I’m going to fight to make sure it never happens again.
Let me know if you stand with me. Add your name if you think we need more protections for airline passengers.
Thank you,
Amy
