I’m going to be brutally honest here.
Up until last month at about this time, when I read that President Obama was heading off for a month to French Polynesia, one of the first things I would do every morning was check Google news to see what he was up to.
I think some silly childish part of me wanted to believe that he would find a way to turn back the clock and make it all go away for us.
Do you remember this picture? I mean can you really blame me?
It’s gotten a lot better since he’s been away. I’ve kind of resigned myself to the fact that we’re on our own here. Nobody’s going to come in and solve this mess for us.
And I was really glad the other day when I realized I hadn’t searched for awhile to find out that Michelle has joined him . (Here’s Wednesday’s Google news search for Obama.)
Don’t get me wrong. There were plenty of things he did as President that disappointed me. But I guess the fact that I met him in person a few times early in the first campaign — saw him at a Barbara Boxer fundraiser even before he announced , spoke with him and shook his hand, stood right next to him in the streets of San Francisco when he got out of his motorcade to talk to the crowd waiting to get into the Bill Graham auditorium — well, when you get that close to this man, let me tell you, he just oozes magic. So it’s been hard, letting go.
We all have these things we hold onto in our lives, things we are so reluctant to let go of. Right now, for example, I’m worried about a decision I have to make about April 29, the day of the People’s Climate March.
Turns out a beginning yoga teacher who has been giving me free yoga lessons for two months now as part of her final project, someone who is going to help me out next Saturday at the first fundraiser for my nonprofit, is holding her very first workshop on the 29th between 2 and 5. I had promised her I’d be in attendance to help her out. I didn’t make the connection between the march and the date of her seminar until she wrote me the other day about how excited and nervous she is.
I just don’t think I can let her down. I don’t think I can march. Wow!
We’re talking a whole lot of letting go here!
What about you? Any things you’ve had to let go of lately? How are you doing with it?
Kitchen Table Kibitzing is a community series for those who wish to share part of the evening around a virtual kitchen table with readers of Daily Kos who aren’t throwing pies at one another. Drop by and tell us about your weather, your garden, or what you cooked for supper. Newcomers may notice that many who post diaries and comments in this series already know one another to some degree, but we welcome guests at our kitchen table, and hope to make some new friends as well.
