Well, my own opinion on the question is No, none are truly Christian, including Catholics.
First a small background: I am not a Christian, nor any other Religion; though ya could consider me a “Lapsed” Buddhist.
I have been reading the New Testament (am using The Jerusalem Bible, readers edition 1968), if for no other reason than to try to have an understanding of where these folks are coming from. I kinda wondered if I might encounter Jesus in these readings, but can’t say that I have; just trying to keep an open mind. I have gotten as far as Paul’s (or Saul, if ya will) letters to the Hebrews.
While I have encountered a lot of good things; such as “Love thy neighbor as thyself”; which Paul writes is the foundation of all the other Commandments. At one point he also admonishes Husbands to Love their Wife as much as them selves.
My opinions expressed are purely my own and my take on what I have read. I found Matthew to be somewhat vengeful, Mark not as much, and Luke OK. Of the four my favorite is the Gospel of John; much more of the Love one would expect from the scant discussions there are of Jesus. “I give you a new Commandment; Love one another as I have Loved you”, is one of my favorites. In reading the small amount of text about Jesus, I find none of the Misogyny contained in later writings of folks such as Paul; in fact when he is summoned to aid Lazarus, mention is made of his love of Lazarus and his sisters Mary and Margaret; also that he Wept as he called Lazarus forth.
The basis of my title is from reading “The Letters of Paul”. From what I read there All churches, from their structure to their teachings; are based on Paul. Paul defines the structures, customs and observances.
What bothered me most was his attitude towards Women (he was a Celibate, according to the writings). For example “Women in Church are to have their heads covered and be veiled”, they are to “remain silent” and if they have questions to ask their husbands at home. In another passage he places the Blame for the Fall of Adam directly on Eve, alone.
There is so much more, but his “Letters” are long and I’m just trying to make a point; if ya really want to know more read Paul’s Letters.
Based on what I have read and my knowledge of the actions and teachings of contemporary Christian Churches; they should more accurately be called “Churches of Paul”, as they are based on what he taught: supposedly in the name of Jesus. And yes, he calls it Christs Church; but as I said what Paul taught only vaguely resembles Jesus and much is his own add-on’s and Opinions.
If you have bothered to read this far; Thanks, yer a better man than i am Gunga Din.
