Today’s the day. Eighteen candidates are on the ballot in the race to replace now-Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price in the House and represent Georgia’s 6th Congressional District. Democrat Jon Ossoff leads, according to the few polls available, but if no one gets 50 percent of the vote in this traditionally deep red district, the election will go to a June 20 run-off.
It’s clear that the energy is behind Ossoff, who is benefiting not just from a blizzard of small-dollar contributions but from a volunteer army in the district. Samuel L. Jackson has even recorded a radio ad for Ossoff, saying:
We have to channel the great vengeance and furious anger we have for this administration into votes at the ballot box.
But this is still a district with a strong habit of voting Republican—a district that, as Republican state Sen. Fran Millar said, was “not drawn to get Hank Johnson’s protégé to be my representative”—and Ossoff not only has to overcome that partisan lean, he also has to contend with desperate Republican attack ads. That’s why he needs you. It’s time to make a final push. If you’re not in the district, channel that great vengeance and furious anger into some GOTV calls to get other people to the ballot box.
