I was checking the blogs and tweets at a table in a New York City park the other day, when an elderly woman approached the trash can next to me. She held up a beautiful, potted white orchid plant, inspected it for a moment, and then dropped it unceremoniously into the garbage.
I stood up and walked the two paces to the bin to more closely inspect the discarded flora. It looked fine, and orchids are cool! So, reluctant as I am to reach into Manhattan garbage cans, I grabbed it and brought it back to my table. I was suddenly at the only table in the park with a centerpiece.
I probably stayed 15 or 20 more minutes, enjoying the warm weather. As I got up to go home, I considered bringing the orchids with me. Ugh — who wants to schlep a plant, and it could be infested with bedbugs or Zika mosquitoes, I thought. So I left it at the table.
A couple of hours later I went back outside again, and the orchids were still at the table. What’s more, the table was occupied by an attractive young couple:
I wondered if perhaps this was an early date for these lovebirds. Maybe one of them said something poetic about the orchids, making the other fall madly in love with them. If so, and they wind up having a child, that kid can someday thank me for bringing him or her into the world.
Talk about Chaos Theory! That’s why it’s important to always 'trash it forward’.
What about you? Have you ever trashed it forward? Or, what’s the coolest thing you ever found in the garbage?
