It’s Election Day in Georgia’s 6th Congressional District, where polls show Democrat Jon Ossoff with a commanding lead in the field of 18 candidates, but short of the 50 percent he’d need to avoid a run-off. If you need an indication of how worried Republicans are about this race for what has been a safely red district, look to the White House. Donald Trump—or a staffer who can write semi-intelligibly—has been tweeting up a storm, including one tweet trying to set expectations to low:
Seriously, it is a win for Democrats that there’s even a Democrat expected to make a top-two run-off, let alone one in the lead and in striking distance of 50 percent. Don’t try to sell this “it will be a win if we poor Republicans can get to a run-off in a district where the last Republican representative won by more than 20 points” nonsense. Trump also recorded a robocall, saying “Only you can stop the super liberal Democrats and Nancy Pelosi’s group and, in particular, Jon Ossoff” and repeatedly warning that “your Republican congressional seat” or “your congressional seat” might be “taken.” (Did they let him write that robocall script himself?)
Ossoff's response: “I appreciate the president’s interest in the race.”
Donald Trump is telling you that this race is important and that Democrats are threatening to win, and while usually you don’t want to believe a word he says, he’s not lying about that.
