There is a rift between the group that calls themselves ‘Real Progressives’ and the Democrats that they deride as SJWs.
Now, we ‘Identity Politics’ people include every group that does not fall into the category of ‘White Cis Gendered Male’, so it surprises me that somehow women and minorities are now seen as the ‘enemy’. This is not about one politician in particular, so don’t even think about it. It is about the wave of people who consider themselves too ‘left’ to be in the Democratic Party.
We, women and minorities, have been fighting for social justice for centuries and it should be obvious that we don’t think our rights are up for negotiation, or should be considered distractions. I have heard time and time again that we could get more white men if we just chill out on women’s reproductive rights or if we stop using ‘identity politics’ as a way to reach voters of various groups. That somehow economic justice will magically solve the race issues or the sexism and other bigotries that we suffer from. That we are selfish for not ‘working for everybody’ rather than fighting for the oppressed minorities.
This gives the impression that as long as everybody has money, they will suddenly see the world differently. They won’t. The only thing that improves our situations as minorities is fighting for our rights, all day, everyday. It is really horrifying that our own ‘allies’ have no problem with telling us that ‘identity politics’ are the reason we lose. I have news for the purists of economic equality. We ‘identity people’ are the most reliable groups of Democrats in the party. And we are not going anywhere or changing the party to suit their need for conformity. Social justice is here to stay. Identity politics is the politics of pushing for rights for the groups that are sadly oppressed. If that bothers you, maybe you are the one who needs to look inside and correct yourself. We are the base. We are reliable voters. We are Democrats. And we fight like hell for the people that this society treats like garbage. Maybe it is time for you to join US?
