April 23, 2017
The Azalea Garden in Fairmount Park is located adjacent to the Philadelphia Art Museum and the Fairmount Waterworks along the Schuylkill River. Late April is when the garden’s namesake plants bloom, though there are a large number of other plants there that bloom during the year and which I have been documenting in various diaries. However, this one will focus on the azalea blossoms I saw during a walk through there over the weekend.
The Azalea is a blooming shrub in the Rhododendron family. There are over 10,000 different cultivars of azalea — so please forgive me for not trying to identify the types below since there was no identifications supplied in the garden.
The Daily Bucket is a regular feature of the Backyard Science group. It is a place to note any observations you have made of the world around you. Insects, weather, meteorites, climate, birds and/or flowers. All are worthy additions to the bucket. Please let us know what is going on around you in a comment. Include, as close as is comfortable for you, where you are located. Each note is a record that we can refer to in the future as we try to understand the patterns that are quietly unwinding around us.

* — Bumblebees mainly, but also saw some Carpenter Bees as well. No honeybees seen however.
The garden has a number of benches along the edges, open space in the middle, and is crossed by sidewalks entering from multiple directions. It is a popular place for people to walk dogs, bring their children, or to simply sit and enjoy nice weather.
