This week, I seem to keep coming across oddball news stories. Always desperate for a CUA topic, I decided to go with the flow. First up, from Ars Technica, Man takes drone out for a sunset flight, drone gets shot down. In a nation awash in guns, this could happen anywhere. This incident took place in Olive Springs, Tennessee, not far from Knoxville.
“I flew down over my aunt’s house, and I heard a gunshot within the first three to four minutes of flight,” Jones told Ars. “So I sped up and flew back towards my house.”
…
“I took two pictures, then I heard the gunshot, and all of a sudden my drone started spiraling down—I’m sitting there trying to keep it aloft and there was no lift.”
Drone flight by civilians is so new that the law has not caught up with the technology. While downing a drone is technically a crime because it’s illegal to shoot at any aircraft, prosecutors are not exactly lining up to punish the perpetrators.
Current law cannot even tell us whether overflights of private property are illegal.
...American law does not yet recognize the concept of aerial trespass.
Okay, enough about drones. Let’s go bowling! A long, long time ago, I bowled in leagues. As I’ve mentioned in CUA comments before, I gave it up because I was one of the only bowlers in the world who did not smoke. The fun of bowling was not worth the raging headaches that came from the tobacco overdose. My best game ever was 242, as I recall. Never did I threaten to bowl a perfect 300.
Thus I am in awe of this headline from yahoo sports: Bowler sets record by slinging perfect 300 game in less than 90 seconds. This was done as a stunt, as Ben Ketola had the entire bowling alley to himself. He methodically threw strikes on Lanes 1 through 10, and returned to the first two lanes for the final two strikes. Stunt or not, there aren’t many people who could pull this off! Watch the video. Unlike so many things we view online, you won’t be asking for that 90 seconds of your life back.
Ben Ketola might very well be capable of hitting a drone with a bowling ball.
Rarely do I click on any article that takes me to a Fox News site. Seeing Fox, Science, and Stumps on Mars, all in one graphic, does not exactly inspire me to explore that link in hopes of increasing my knowledge.
However, I did find myself on a Fox site by accident, reading about efforts of early humans to deal with hurting teeth. I’ve often wondered how our ancestors coped with cavities and broken teeth. Apparently they have been trying for millennia: Earliest dental fillings discovered in 13,000-year-old skeleton.
Researchers recently analyzed horizontal striations inside the tooth holes, and concluded that these scratch marks were most likely produced by the scraping and twisting of a hand-held tool. This ice age person was probably in pain from necrotic or infected tooth pulp inside the teeth; seeking relief, they might have intentionally scooped out the decayed tissue, enlarging their cavities in the process, according to the study published online March 27 in the American Journal of Physical Anthropology.
But the dental work didn't end there. Inside the tooth cavities, there were traces of bitumen, a tar-like substance that might have been used as an antiseptic or a filling to protect the tooth from getting infected, the researchers said.
Makes me appreciate the nearly-painless dental appointment I had last week, having a tooth ground down and fitted for a crown. The most severe pain involved my bank account when I paid for the work.
When I finished reading that article, I saw this: Sasquatch blamed for Idaho car crash. Having written my own diaries about Sasquatch here and here, there was no way I could ignore the story.
An Idaho woman who crashed into a deer on the night of March 22 claims the animal was chased in front of her car by a sasquatch.
The unidentified 50-year-old from the town of Tensed ... was driving along U.S. 95 near Potlatch and saw a shaggy seven- to eight-foot-tall creature running after the deer on the side of the highway, the Moscow-Pullman Daily News reports.
The least surprising part of the article?
Police found no evidence of a sasquatch at the scene of the accident
Okay, all you Bigfoot lovers, what’s on your mind today. Any unusual happenings to report. It’s an open thread, so anything goes.
DATE CHANGED! See original diary for an update.
