Republicans are on the wrong side of public opinion on everything related to health care, from repealing Obamacare to defunding Planned Parenthood. And if the whole healthcare system goes down the toilet, Republicans will be on the hook for it, says a late-April survey from Kaiser Family Foundation.
Sixty percent of voters surveyed "think President Trump should not try to pass an ACA replacement plan using negotiating tactics like these that could disrupt the ACA’s insurance marketplaces and cause people to lose health coverage," and a lot more—74 percent—say he should be working with Democrats to make the existing law better. And three-quarters also say that Planned Parenthood should continue to receive federal funds. But here's what Republicans had better be paying attention to.
A majority (64%) of the public, including most Republicans (53%), say that because President Trump and Republicans in Congress are now in control of the government, they are responsible for any problems with the ACA moving forward. That’s more than twice the share (28%) who say that President Obama and Democrats in Congress are responsible because they passed the law. The share of Republicans who say President Trump and Republicans in Congress are responsible is up significantly from 34 percent in early April.
Here's the other thing Republicans should remember, as President Obama reminded them on Friday: Obamacare is more popular that Trump. It's polling at 48 percent in this KFF poll and at 49 percent in the poll aggregate, while Trump is at 44. But, hey, he's Mr. Popularity compared to Paul Ryan.
So this week doesn't seem like a better time to be trying to revive Zombie Trumpcare for what would be the fourth time.
House Republicans are hell-bent on ripping away our health insurance. Call your member of Congress at 202-224-3121, and demand they vote NO on a renewed Trumpcare that is worse than the one before. Remind them they work for you.
