I had so much fun last week by showing some useful sites I found on the internet that I decided to do something similar. This week I found a bunch of sites that I found to be way cool because they are all about science stuff. The March for Science gave me the motivation to search and seek. Her goes.
This first thing I’m gonna share is actually not a site but a picture. I think it’s great. It shows the electromagnetic spectrum in a way that looks old-timey and is awesome. You can right-click on it then choose “search google for image” to get a larger version that’s easier to read. It’s worth it.
You know I love physics and chemistry. Remember about 5 years ago when they proved the Higgs-Boson particle does indeed exist? That was a tremendous thing which finally finished the “Standard Model of Physics.” Of course, quantum physics is anther matter. Below is a snip I took. Go to the link below it to get to the interactive site.
We’ve all heard of Quarks and Leptons (the electron is one type of Lepton, btw. They were discovered in 1897 at Cavendish Laboratory). We’ve heard of photons (a type of Boson. Photons were discovered in 1923 at Washington University). What hadn’t been found yet is the central missing part...the so-called “God Particle” from which all the subatomic originate. The Higgs-Boson is the “God Particle.” www.symmetrymagazine.org/...
Did you know water droplets can travel uphill over super-heated surfaces? You’ve all dripped water in a super hot skillet before and watched the droplets dance around intact for a while before dissipating. That phenomenon is called the “Leidenfrost Effect.”
Let's take a pause with all the science for a moment. Check out the latest thing on my bucket list! Perfect. You all know I’ve skydived and scuba dived and love a little thrill seeking.
Next is an interactive Periodic Table of Elements. Below is a screen cap. Go to the site and play around with it. The nerd I am about chemistry (you can make incredible things) I love this site. www.gregthatcher.com/...
Thia next site is fun, fun, fun. You can check out all sorts of maps for any state. I’m certain foresterbob would love it. Joe Bob Briggs says, “Check it out.” fermi.jhuapl.edu/...
On a bit of a down note. Do you remember learning about the “Great Dying” in earth’s past when global warming got out of control and caused a massive extinction of life on earth? Climate change is real folks and humans are the main generator now of causing it to happen. Hey, this is science in real time and we’re living it. www.salon.com/...
Whereas 2.4 gigatons of carbon were injected into the atmosphere per year during the Great Dying, about 10 gigatons are being injected per year by contemporary industrial society. Thus, the sixth mass extinction mentioned above, also called the Anthropocene extinction, could turn out to be perhaps even worse than the Permian-Triassic die-off.
Spacecraft Cassini, which was sent to Saturn for study, is now on its final mission which is to navigate through the rings of Saturn then crash on the planet while collecting data we’ve never gotten before. Check out the sounds of this happening.
I’ll end with another fascinating interactive thing. It shows you what happens at various sites on the internet every second! Below is a screen cap of just the very beginning of the thing. You scroll down through it all. Wow! onesecond.designly.com
