Kos recently made a post that has been lighting up this site like a Christmas tree. Why? Because he decided that what “Unity” means is not a collective effort to solve social and economic issues in our society, but rather going all in on social issues and ignoring the millions who are suffering in the country economically.
To be frank, the woman who is among the tens of thousands that dies from lack of access to healthcare seems to stop caring that much about being “grabbed by asshole men.”
The black family that is shot in a robbery in an impoverished community starts to care a bit less about police brutality.
The immigrant child who dies from exposure starts to care a bit less about immigration authorities.
I’m not saying that we should ignore social issues. Those and economic issues are often very interconnected and only those who are either uninformed or being purposefully intellectually dishonest would suggest that we silo them off and treat them individually, or only one at all.
But right now millions of families are starving. Millions of children live out on the street and thousands die due to lack of healthcare. Children go to sleep hungry and on an empty stomach, and the parents who are lucky enough to have food and a home must work two or three jobs to support themselves. These people can’t wait for Kos to decide when their suffering stops becoming a “secondary consideration.” They can’t wait for him to be satisfied enough with social issues to finally grace them with his support.
Anyone who is actually serious in fighting for women, immigrants, and black Americans will understand that economic issues affect these groups first and foremost and that social equality cannot come without economic equality. King knew this best. Instead of using these groups as cannon fodder for the pie fights in our party, let’s buckle down and work to solve both the social and economic issues that plague America.
