Elizabeth Holtzman, who worked on Nixon’s articles of impeachment, makes excellent points on seriousness of Comey debacle. Explaining that “collusion… could be treason”, so “firing Comey… could be obstruction of justice."
First she argues for a special prosecutor, saying “No president should be above the law. No president should control a criminal investigation of his own conduct. That is why Congress enacted the statute I authored in the wake of Watergate..."
Next, she explains why Sessions needs to go. "He recused himself from the Russian investigation because he himself concealed information about his meetings with the Russians from the Senate during his confirmation hearings. Since it was apparent that firing Comey could have been related to that investigation, Sessions should have recused himself from that, too. Instead, he wrote to the President favoring Comey's firing, which violated his recusal, making his position as AG untenable.”
Finally, she says Rosenstein should "consider resigning as well”. Since his boss recused on Russia, he must have known the special prosecutor decision would fall to him, so Rosenstein should not have written the memo to fire Comey, calling it “a mistake in judgment". She also noted that "Rosenstein took those [former AG] quotes out of context; it does not appear that any of those criticisms related to whether Comey should be removed. So Rosenstein's memo was at best disingenuous and at worst deliberately misleading, neither of which the holder of his office can afford to be."
We really need to listen to the voice of experience here. This is serious, and we can't afford to continue stumbling around hoping everything will turn out right. When has that worked with Trump so far? Please call for a prosecutor and for the attorney general and his deputy to resign.
