Had a fire which I have said here. Talked about that too much.
House being torn down to the studs. Staying at my parents.
Well across the street. In the house my dad bought for his books. He has a lot of books. I had to move some to go the bathroom and do the dishes when I first got here. I mean a lot of books.
There is a Diary up: Good News! Not Comey: The Westland Five (librarians fired for unionizing): The Union Vote Is Yes!
Got me thinking as I commented and others do about how much I flat out love books.
That I have this fetish. I love college towns. If I visit a new town I almost can't not see the college. The library most of all. I posted this pic, of my first library that took my breath away. Western Illinois University (WIU).
At the time I walked into it as an undergrad I had read two books. The Stand and, I kid you not, The Art of a Deal.
That would change .....
Long story short, after the fire, the folks tasked with boxing up everything and moving all my stuff out of the house let it flood. I lost about 70% of my books. Most look like they were put in a tub of water for days.
I am going to get around $12,500 for them. Honestly I loved all those books. That I could give them away. If you came to my house and where stunned by all the books, I’d talk to you for hours about them. If you showed any interest I’d pull the book off the shelve and hand it to you.
I like how they looked. Walking into a room of books, joy. But not read any of them in ages. Kind of gone digital.
So I am vain and self-centered. Will put much of the money back into the house as it is rebuilt.
But anybody have a charity for reading? Focused on kids would be my choice. Where I could give several thousands to?
Oh, I am a walker. Exploring a new town. I’ve wanted to install a “Little Free Library” outside my house for years. Lazy, never done it. As I was walking I saw this. In the last few days, because I am somewhat OCD I’ve noticed my father has 2-3 of the same book.
I can’t even imagine he’d notice one is gone. Going to knock on these folks door and hand them a box of books.
Input on youth programs would be so welcome. I know folks here are so much in touch with charity and stuff then I am.
