Received this e-mail yesterday from the United Teachers Los Angeles in support of Steve Zimmer’s (D. CA) re-election to LAUSD Board of Education District 4:
Will Los Angeles let out-of-state billionaires buy the school board? It all depends on who shows up to vote on Tuesday.
We need to re-elect Steve Zimmer to the school board because students deserve a progressive champion. Zimmer is the only candidate endorsed by the Democratic Party, LA teachers, Mayor Eric Garcetti, and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders.
Bernie’s endorsement is a big deal. Billionaires have poured so much money into buying this election that he couldn’t stay quiet.
When our city’s educators and local progressive groups have their voices drowned out by special interest attack ads on TV, on the radio and in the mail, we have to stand up and fight back.
Cutting through the noise is hard. That’s why I’m asking you share this on Facebook. People need to know that on Tuesday, there’s only one progressive choice in this race.
The Los Angeles Times, Daily Kos, The American Prospect and other media outlets have all raised a red flag over how much money is in this race. It makes you wonder, why do billionaires who don’t live in California care so much about the LA school board? They’ve never sent their kids to public schools and have no idea what Los Angeles students need, but they’re propping up Nick Melvoin with their big spending to be their voice on the board.
Billionaires hate Zimmer because he won’t give in to their agenda. They’re funding deceptive attack ads to distort his record. But here’s the truth: Zimmer has fought to lower class sizes. He’s responsible for record-high graduation rates. He’s fought to hold charter schools to the same accountability standards as public schools. He’s led the fight against immigration raids on school grounds. And he’s sponsored a resolution calling for “clean money” school board elections. It’s not hard to imagine why billionaires are spending millions to oust him.
In unity,
