I got back home to Gainesville, Florida a few hours ago. I drove up to Atlanta on I75 last Thursday to go celebrate my birthday and Mother’s Day with my mom and sister who still live in the neighborhood I grew up in, more or less. It’s a trip I make pretty frequently. This time it was a little different.
Usually when I drive up that way, once I get a few miles north of Valdosta all I can get on the radio is that horrid right wing shit. You know what I’m talking about, Ann Coulter and that ilk. It’s always been that way, always. Then, usually, when I hit Macon, I can pick up NPR again, but what I get is the Atlanta NPR which pretty much sux except sometimes. It’s been that way for the past three or four years that I’ve been making that trip regularly.
This time it was different. On the way up, I only lost NPR access for about 10 minutes just north of Tifton, and when I regained access, I discovered that Atlanta has added another NPR station that I like much better than the original one. On the way back home today, I got continuous NPR access. That strikes me as a big deal.
If I got it, that means all the truck drivers did, too. For all my beefs with Mara Liasson and Steve Inskeep and especially Cokie Roberts, I’d rather the truck drivers listen to them than Ann Coulter and rush Limbaugh.
My last trip to Atlanta on I75 was last December. This has all happened since then. I’m really happy about that.
Is the left starting to get it that radio coverage is still relevant? I certainly hope so!!! It was relevant enough for me to take the time to write this diary. I want more and I’d like to know how I can further support it beyond writing about it here. Anybody got any insight?
