There can be no argument that the past week has been a very difficult time to be a Republican. Day after day, the scenario is the same: Scandal erupts in the Trump White House, aides frantically scurry to explain away the latest outrage, Republican lawmakers furrow their brows and say they’re troubled yet agree with the excuse du jour—all only to have Trump himself emerge on Twitter to contradict what everyone has been peddling. Lather, rinse, repeat.
But now, with the revelation that Trump asked FBI Director James Comey to shut down his Russia investigation, it may be that Republicans have learned their lesson, because White House officials and lawmakers seem to be coalescing around a simple talking point: Trump is a blithering idiot:
To be fair, the excuse that Trump is an incoherent idiot who should be ignored is the most plausible talking point they’ve come up with yet. So kudos for that.
