Campaign Action
Eleven Democratic senators are calling on the Justice Department’s inspector general to investigate Jeff Sessions’ phony recusal from investigations into the Trump campaign. Noting that, after he pledged to recuse himself from “any existing or future investigations of any matter relating in any way to the campaigns for president of the United States,” Sessions “had an active role in the termination of Director Comey,” who was investigating the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia, the senators write:
His involvement seems to be a clear violation of his recusal, and can only be construed as an attempt to influence an ongoing investigation that threatens to examine his own role in the 2016 presidential campaign, as well as other elements of President Trump’s campaign and administration.
We urge you to investigate whether Attorney General Sessions has violated his recusal, and the rules and regulations that govern it. Further, we ask that if you find a violation that you explore what effect such a violation may have on the ongoing investigations, and how the integrity of these investigations can be restored.
The letter is signed by Martin Heinrich and Tom Udall of New Mexico, Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey of Massachusetts, Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut, Ron Wyden of Oregon, Kirsten Gillibrand of New York, Jack Reed of Rhode Island, Tammy Duckworth of Illinois, and Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell of Washington.
