My dad’s radiation treatments for stage 1B Lung Cancer start today (in a couple of hours), so my thoughts are with him, and I am holding him in The Light.
My dad’s BEST stories are always about practical jokes he’s played… the earliest one I heard about was with him and his best friend as a kid (and good friend as an adult), Russ. They found a can of paint, so they decided to spruce up the neighborhood… starting with the sidewalks.
They were very young kids, but they got into a boatload of trouble for that one!
Another story was about high school — he and some friends went around to all of the clocks in York HS and removed the clappers from the bells… which made silent and confusing end of classes, for awhile.
My favorite work story was when he went to his mark’s tool box — you know, those big wooden chests of stacked drawers, and used 2 sided foam tape to seal the drawers closed together. He said that the trick was to close and then pull up into the drawer above.
He was right — it worked great when I did it to a couple of desks, where I worked!
I arrived at Tuesday night’s PADS shelter location at about 6:20 pm. Rules vary by location, but for awhile we were told NOT to arrive before 6:30, Yet, they always seem to collect cards for the drawing at 6:30 (or even before.)
A gentleman returning to his car told me that they were running late, and didn’t even know if they’d collect cards by 7 pm… Things did get fixed; I guess PADS employees did much of the volunteers’ work (putting out mats, distributing linens.) The volunteers were little little girls — like, Brownies, and their moms were glad to let the kids do all of the work… The girls were ADORABLE, but it sure made things take a long time!
Anyway, I mentioned yesterday that I plan to stick to the PADS shelter diet for awhile… Though it can be heavy in starches (particularly at dinner), I’m so overweight that ANY 3-meal-a-day diet should help me to lose weight fairly quickly and in a more healthy way than many diets. So, here was yesterday and this morning’s meals:
Tuesday Breakfast: (St. Isidore Catholic Church) — Scrambled eggs, 2 slices of bacon , 2 slices of toast
Tuesday Bagged Lunch: (supplied by St. Isidore Catholic Church — PBJ sandwich, most of a bag of Cool Ranch Doritos, banana, 1 Capri Sun, 1 Koolaid Lemonade (a second saved for another day.) Bottle of water saved for work.
Tuesday Dinner: (Downers Grove UMC) — Pasta in tomato sauce with meatballs, slice garlic bread, *fresh* salad, Italian dressing.
Wednesday Breakfast: (Downers Grove UMC) — Fruit salad (melon, grapes, blueberries), slider-sized breakfast sandwich (egg, cheese, ham)
I stopped at McDonald’s for a Coke Zero. I’ll drink what’s left of that with my lunch. I always check the lunch bag because people try to re-pack them, and I’ve ended up with no sandwich or 4 fruits before. :) Actually, 4 fruits sounds yummy… Today’s lunch looked similar to yesterday, with 2 tangerines instead of a banana, and a small bottle of water instead of 3 flavored drinks plus a large bottle of water.
I did remember to bring a charge cord into the library, and my Amazon Fire is plugged in. charging it yesterday at work from 2 until 6 did not charge it fully. Between watching/listening to it at night and watching it for awhile in the morning, it really needs to get fully charged, or very close! (And that’s even with WIFI turned off, to save on power!)
Oh, now less than 1 hour until my dad starts his radiation treatments. I think I will try to knit, check Facebook and check in here before I have to leave for work.
OH! I just checked my email. Thank you (((bfitz))) for the pay pal donation… I really am ok financially — better than I ever was in PADS, just feeling stoopid for letting someone steal my cash and gift cards on hand! Your kind donation will replace a gas card!
