When the Daily Beast revealed the extensive anti-woman Internet history of New Hampshire Republican state Rep. Robert Fisher, he ignored calls for his resignation and said he wasn’t going anywhere. Fortunately, that declaration didn’t last very long. The Concord Monitor reports:
New Hampshire state Rep. Robert Fisher resigned on Wednesday, a few hours after a House committee narrowly voted to recommend no disciplinary action against him for his involvement in a misogynistic online forum.
The abrupt resignation came amid calls for the Attorney General’s Office to investigate Fisher for possible perjury, after he said under oath last week he is no longer involved in the Reddit forum known as “The Red Pill.”
When the truth about his misogynist, rapey beliefs came to light, Fisher tried to make this new problem go away with the now classic Republican approach: deny, deny, deny. Fortunately, he was not smart enough to cover up his extensive trail of online activity as a so-called “men’s rights activist.” On the other hand, it seems that this resignation shouldn’t be seen as a sign that he’s any less sorry about his dangerous and violent beliefs. Check out his resignation statement:
“Unfortunately, the falsehoods, lies and comments of an overzealous blogger and some of my colleagues have created a situation where I must genuinely consider the safety and wellbeing of my girlfriend, my family, and myself,” he said in an email. “It is with a heavy heart that I will be unable to complete my term.”
Farewell, Fisher. You won’t be missed — by the folks who believe women are people, anyway.
