Yesterday’s story in the New York Times included a gemstone of political humor. FBI Director James Comey, a 6’8” giant of a man, tried to hide by wearing a blue suit and blending into the curtains of the Blue Room to avoid having to cozy up with Donald Trump. When this failed, he used his extraordinary wingspan to keep Trump at a distance to avoid a hug.
In response, Clinton aid Phillip Reines has released video of Clinton literally rehearsing evading being hugged by the Donald. In this light-hearted clip, her partner insists on the hug and virtually tackles her from behind as she flees giggling. Maybe it’s just me, but it makes me happy to see Clinton’s team enjoying themselves during rehearsal. It must have been a rough campaign for all of them.
It may seem immature, but we must be reminded that Donald Trump has a strange sense of personal space, both physical and emotional. Not only that, but he has an odd habit of yanking people in during handshakes, nearly pulling Judge Gorsuch off his podium at one point. As a small woman, Clinton was certainly smart to avoid his hugs.
Anyway, a little childish humor to keep us sane here in the resistance. Maybe it can give us a little strength to think we’re not alone in our aversion to Trump and what he represents.
