Received this e-mail today from Newton Mayor Setti Warren’s (D. MA) gubernatorial campaign:
My parents grew up in two of the poorest neighborhoods in New York City. My dad served in the Korean War, came home, and used his G.I. bill benefits to purchase the home where I grew up--the same home where I live now with my wife and two kids today.
Massachusetts is a place where families like mine have always found a better future, but people and communities are falling behind. Today, I am announcing my candidacy for Governor of Massachusetts because I believe we can do better. Check out the video:
Confronting economic inequality is the challenge of our time, but despite years of solid economic growth, our state budget is a mess. Fixing it starts with telling the truth: we must raise revenue by eliminating tax breaks for special interests and asking those who make more than a million dollars a year ($20,000 a week!) to pay their fair share.
As governor, I plan to use this new revenue to fund strategies that will reduce the scourge of economic inequality, like making public colleges free and moving us towards single-payer healthcare.
We must make a generational commitment now to secure a better future for our children. That’s what my parents did when they purchased our home in Newton, and that’s what I intend to do as governor.
