During the Presidential election last year, the press kept on talking about the pre-election stress disorder, collective stress, post-election stress disorder, Trump trauma, election anxiety, and other conditions that Americans were suffering from because of the election. This is especially true since Pres. Trump enjoyed an unexpected victory.
Less than half of the voters voted for Trump. People are either fearing for their lives or are happy with the results of the election. Minorities, as well as African Americans and Latinos, rebuffed Trump’s purported outreach towards their direction. Trump, to them, is someone that should be feared and loathed.
Myriads of therapists all over the country offered advice. Safe spaces have been the rage and Democrats kept on delivering angry rhetoric. So, what is now the prognosis as Mr. Trump has held the seat for 17 weeks already?
This is the question American Psychiatric Association wants answered. The association polled the entire nation regarding the subject of noxious and toxic politics. Below are the results of the poll.
“The American people are still split on whether politics has greatly affected their lives in some way or another. From the poll, 51% say that they are anxious about the impact of the country’s political scene on their lives. On the other hand, 49% say they are not anxious and they are still doing well regardless of what is happening in the White House,” reports the organization.
“There are also those who claim that they are very anxious. These people are in the same age groups and income levels. They are either Hispanic, Black or Caucasian.”
“Democrats reported a heightened level of anxiety with the impact of the country’s politics on their daily lives. Among the Democrats, 62% are somewhat or extremely anxious regarding the impact in comparison to the Republicans which only amounted to 44%,” added the APA.
The group also found that the Americans are particularly edgy about a couple more things.
From the same poll, the APA found out that more than half of the nation is anxious about keeping themselves safe. More than half of the nation is also constantly worried about how they can keep their families safe.
Another 63% worry about the state of their health insurance, while 56% are anxious on how they can pay their bills and expenses. Only 46% claimed that they are anxious about the relationships they have with friends, coworkers, and family.
Regardless of the results, one can say that the public is great at showing it can keep itself together. In fact, it has been keeping it together for several weeks already. From the adults that were interviewed, 41% said that the anxiety that they are experiencing is just the same as last year. About 36% said they are more anxious than ever and 20% said they are less anxious.
The association conducted the poll from April 24 to 27. The results were released last Tuesday, and they surveyed 1,000 adults that are currently living in the US.
