It seems that Trump is determined to reverse anything and everything that President Obama accomplished, no matter whether it makes any sense and no matter the consequences.
Thus, it would seem that this report in The Hill is more about spite than anything else.
President Donald Trump plans on reversing a set of policies softening relations with Cuba, according to a report from The Daily Caller.
The U.S.-Cuba Trade and Economic Council, a non-partisan group, said the Trump administration is preparing to announce the changes to Obama-era policies in a June speech in Miami, according to the Daily Caller.
The Hill is basing its story on a report from The Daily Caller, which is a right-wing rag. So it may or may not be true. But it would be unusual for The Hill to go with this story unless they believed it to be credible.
Newsweek is also running with the story. They also cite The Daily Caller.
So take it with a grain of salt.
The opening that Obama arranged was limited because Congress has not voted to lift economic sanctions. So, if it is indeed true, the biggest effect would likely be on American travelers, especially on Cuban-Americans going back and forth.
But one disturbing note from the report is this:
The report cites two unnamed sources who said a bipartisan trio of senators -- Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), and Mario Diaz-Balart (R-Fla.) -- pushed for the reversal.
Menendez is a longtime hard-liner on Cuba but he apparently is so intent on his ideological zeal that he’s willing to make a deal with the devil himself, i.e. Trump.
It should also be noted that this policy reversal comes right after Trump met with the Pope, who was instrumental in pushing Obama and Cuba to reach the new policy.
