He was a ‘People’s President’ while in office—and he remains so today. This is one of the gazillion reasons the world remains in love with Jimmy Carter. On Thursday, James Parker Sheffield (@JaySef) tweeted a video for all to enjoy:
If you are whirling with positive jealousy, you can actually meet President Carter on any given Sunday during his weekly Sunday School class in Plains, Georgia at the Marantha Church. He has been known to take a photo with anyone who attends the class and would like stay after to take one with him. If former First Lady Rosaylynn Carter is there, she will probably join him. I know this because I went, and they did, and I have a photo to prove it. I was there the same day President Carter first announced, during the class, that he was cancer-free after being diagnosed six months earlier. The news initiated a joyful celebration around the globe. As man of great faith, Jimmy Carter has spent his life giving and walking the talk, and you can be sure, he is a veracious powerhouse and he does not hesitate to call out/censure religious hypocrisy when he sees it.
At 92, the 39th American president, also a Nobel Peace Prize laureate continues, through action and deed, to advocate for human rights, democracy and the elimination of disease around the world, via the The Carter Center (co-founded with wife, Rosalynn Carter). Together, they do great good, including physically building homes with Habitat for Humanity, one week every year—since the 1994. The couple has been married for close to seven decades and the former president refers to the former first lady as his “greatest influence” and says, “Marrying Rosalynn was the best thing I ever did.”
Before becoming president:
[Jimmy Carter] was educated in the public school of Plains, attended Georgia Southwestern College and the Georgia Institute of Technology, and received a B.S. degree from the United States Naval Academy in 1946. In the Navy he became a submariner, serving in both the Atlantic and Pacific fleets and rising to the rank of lieutenant. Chosen by Admiral Hyman Rickover for the nuclear submarine program, he was assigned to Schenectady, New York, where he took graduate work at Union College in reactor technology and nuclear physics, and served as senior officer of the pre-commissioning crew of the Seawolf, the second nuclear submarine.
During his time in the Oval Office, President Carter kept our country out of war and never dropped a bomb or fired a bullet under the American banner. One of his most remarkable accomplishments was facilitating the Camp David Accords between Israel and Egypt—a peace treaty that has lasted almost 40 years. (A two-state solution between Israel and Palestine can be attained he believes and he’s written about how it can be done.) President Carter’s acts of peace have spared the lives of perhaps millions of innocent civilians over the years. While in office, he also created the U.S. Department of Energy and was the first to installed solar panels on the White House. He was ahead of his time when it came to protecting the environment, climate and planet.
Also the author of 28 books, Jimmy Carter has also been a strong voice in denouncing the violence and suppression of girls/women worldwide, blaming most of the problem on on misogynistic and controlling religious leaders. The list of President Carter’s achievements, honors and awards goes on and on.
