At 12:24am tomorrow, it officially will be Summer here in the Northern Hemisphere! So tonight, let’s hear how we all spent our last day of Spring… grab a seasonal beverage of choice and hop below the story break after the obligatory word from our sponsor!
Here at Top Comments we welcome longtime as well as brand new Daily Kos readers to join us at 10pm Eastern. We strive to nourish community by rounding up some of the site's best, funniest, most mojo'd & most informative commentary, and we depend on your help!! If you see a comment by another Kossack that deserves wider recognition, please send it either to topcomments at gmail or to the Top Comments group mailbox by 9:30pm Eastern. Please please please include a few words about why you sent it in as well as your user name (even if you think we know it already :-)), so we can credit you with the find!
I know that for some of us it’s felt like summer for quite some time, with dangerous heat, tornadoes, and other warm weather hallmarks. I’ve finally given in and replace the long-sleeved shirts on my shelves with sleeveless shirts. My sandals take up space where my cooler-weather leather shoes lived for nine months. The only evidence of winter in my mudroom is the bag of rock salt shoved behind the charcoal, because I can’t lift it to get it downstairs!
In our house and I suspect many houses with school-aged children, summer begins five minutes after school ends for the year. Here in the northeast, that’s usually sometime in mid-June (although Senior graduation usually is several weeks earlier much to every younger sibling’s dismay!). K2 finished 6th grade, his first year of middle school, at 12:01pm today. He was in full summer vacation mode immediately, getting some xbox in before spending three hours playing soccer with a friend.
As a college student home for the summer break since May, K1 has been working at her internship and today underwent one of the rituals of many places of employment (she’s starting a job shortly in addition to the internship)- drug screening. We had a long conversation about why it’s unconscionable that many Republicans tie the (let’s call it what it is) humiliating experience of mandatory drug testing to receiving public assistance.
Mr. Brillig and I don’t *exactly* get a summer break, but our schedules will relax a bit. His daily commute gets a LOT easier in both directions, and I don’t have to run a regimented morning ritual to get everyone out the door on a precise schedule. We’ll grill more, get up to Maine to visit family over the July 4th weekend, and hopefully find the time to ENJOY this season!
How about you? Are you a summer person, or put up with it until the heat finally dissipates? Does your schedule or obligations change in the summer, or does one week like like another? Enjoy these hours before the Summer Solstice perusing what you visit this diary series to see- the trio of Top Comments, Mojo and Pictures!

Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down.
