Maya Angelou famously said: “when people show you who they are, believe them.” This weekend in Olathe, Kansas, Republicans put on full display exactly who they are and held a fundraiser aimed at promoting the Republican brand.
When this advertisement began circulating earlier in the week, individuals like myself were stunned. What on earth was the point? An ad that openly mocked the black lives matter moment was first seen hours after the verdict in the Philando Castile trial. Using rainbow type, in the middle of LGBT pride month, the advertisement struck a nerve with many Democratic members and Republicans.
David Lightner, Chairman of Olathe Republican Party and a strong supporter of Kris Kobach, offered this non-apology: “If it was taken the wrong way, I’m sorry. And I apologize”. Lightner told the Kansas City Star he didn’t mean anything the way it seemed, and people just read things into his attempt at humor.
Kris Kobach had highlighted the event as a show of his support, knowing he would win the straw poll to be held. While he looked forward to winning the straw poll, Secretary of State Kobach ran into a buzz saw in federal court:

Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach was fined $1,000 on Friday by a federal magistrate judge for "patently misleading representations" he made to the court about the contents of a document he was photographed taking into a November meeting with then President-elect Donald Trump.
"The court agrees that the defendant's deceptive conduct and lack of candor warrant the imposition of sanctions," U.S. Magistrate Judge James O'Hara wrote in his ruling.
That’s right. Kris Kobach was found to have lied to a federal judge and receive a direct fine for it. As a result, he may face issues with the Kansas Bar Association for his behavior.
On Saturday afternoon, though, Kobach embraced the endorsement of Olathe Republicans, ignoring entirely the issues presented in their “joking” advertisement.
No word as to whether or not he was able to raise together the $1,000 in court fines he owes.
