There has long been threads here about what we are reading, in one form or the other, and I LOVE them when I catch them. I make notes on the books people here tell me they are reading, that also appeal to me.
But unless I’m missing something, there are not consistent threads about what we’re watching.
I am an ardent reader and an ardent watcher. And, IMO, today’s TV choices, or streaming choices, however you want to call it, are exceptional. Current movies a bit less for me, but I find those that speak to me.
So I’ll just get to what I’m watching.
Yes, I did the whole House of Cards recent season. I had some discomfort w/it at first, as watching this under Obama is a lot different than watching it under Trump. But, eventually I just let that all go and went with the story line.
I won’t say more for those of you who have not yet watched but will say, once again, this series ended on a hell of a quote from Claire. Let’s remember this IS fiction, and judge it as so.
Same for me regarding the latest season of Homeland. You can pick and paw over it all, but both these seasons ended w/compelling questions. SO MUCH DIFFERENT than what I grew up w/in TV and so much better. Yes, I really do think TV is in a golden age far beyond the old hoary references to the old “golden age” of TV that occurred in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s.
Then, there was Blood Lines for us. Finished the last season in the series, and there are many who think it was crap. But, for me, the sense of place was SO STRONG HERE, and I was SO drawn into that. I think the third season was better than the second, and the first season was the best. But ALL seasons of this story is cinematic beyond the usual expectations of TV. To me, Blood Lines was the best “southern gothic” thing going, despite its mistakes.
And hey “Jessica Jones!” This is a part of the Marvel series on Netflix, and we are close to the end of it. I really like how “heroes” are re-described here. How hard it is to be a “gifted one.” AND, how Jessica Jones is just a a good psychological thriller.
As for recent movies, particularly in the summer, I struggle with having any interest. BUT, I do want to see “Beatriz at Dinner.” Check out the trailers for this.
Also, in terms of movies passed by and now out of sight, we recently watched “I’ll See You in my Dreams” with Blythe Dinner and Sam Elliot. OMG, can I even begin to say how much I love Sam Elliot as an actor? Or maybe just as a guy you want to see more of, thru every season of his life.
This movie is So sweet and funny, and so poignant. Highly recommend.
So what about y’all, what are YOU watching these days? Like w/books, I want to tune into word of mouth on what we watch, as well as what we read.
