I’m not wealthy by any means, but I have been a supporter of The Democratic Party — with both votes and money — my entire life. Certainly not millions… not even hundreds of thousands… but I max out on each presidential campaign and I have contributed to the committees and the candidates over the years.
But as of today, my financial support will be limited exclusively to individual candidates that I support based on their positions. As an example, while I am a resident of Texas, I contributed to Elizabeth Warren’s senatorial campaign when she was running, because I am both aligned to her core positions and felt it was imperative that she defeat Scott Brown for that senate seat.
Similarly, I supported Jon Ossoff in GA-06 because based on Karen Handel’s track record of self-aggrandizement and personal power accumulation and Jon’s willingness to focus on the issues rather than just be anti-Trump made him a good candidate.
But I get emails nearly daily from both of you, Nancy Pelosi and virtually every democratic candidate running for anything. You’ve distributed my email address so far and wide that everyone thinks of me as nothing more than a checkbook. That stops today.
First, I am giving absolutely zero dollars to the DNC, the DCCC, the DSCC or any other national committee of the party until you have communicated what I consider to be an effective strategy for realigning the party towards key values and issues that will speak to the wider electorate. I am all for the advancement of minority, LGBTQ, immigration and social change that we’ve stood for all these years. But I recognize fully that those issues are not enough. We need to paint a VERY CLEAR picture that we are not simply anti-Trump, anti-GOP, anti-racism, anti-homophobia, anti-anything. Being opposed to things is not enough. We need a message that clearly communicates what we are FOR.
Also, I’m ever-so-weary of the scare tactic messages I receive daily from you guys. “The GOP is winning!”, “Mitch McConnell is gathering votes to repeal ObamaCare”. I know that the Dems are in the minority and unable to mount a serious challenge, but I’m not quite sure how me contributing money today is going to help defeat the GOP’s attempt to steal healthcare insurance from 23 million people. I’m not going to give you money just because you spread fear and panic.
So, from now on… zero money. Zero. All the message from Nancy and the committees are being thrown into the Spam folder. And I lay down the gauntlet that challenges you to build and deliver a message of vision for the future. Give us a message of inspiration rather than panic. A message of, dare I say it, Hope instead of fear. Until that happens, you shall get no funding from me. And you’ll continue to lose elections. And it’s exactly what you’ll deserve.
