I had my six month check-up with my cardiologist on Tuesday. I was supposed to follow-up after my cardio-version six or seven weeks ago, but I knew I had this one scheduled so I let the other one slide. After a few follow up questions the doc told me he’d like to do an ablation or more specifically a cryoballoon ablation. Cryoballoon ablations have had better outcomes and less need to repeat an ablation. Now we just have to see if my insurance will cover it.
Cryoballoon ablation is specifically designed to treat the pulmonary veins of the left atrium. The procedure is more effective and safer than radiofrequency ablations because it not only covers a larger surface area of the pulmonary vein, but also has a decreased chance of injuring adjacent structures of the heart. Cryoballoon ablation also produces a higher single session treatment success rate than radiofrequency ablation.

As many of you know, VeloVixen’s daughter is finishing up her interventional cardiology fellowship at University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, so we’ve asked her to suggest a few follow-up questions for the doc and his team. As Rachel says;
