Here in Oregon, we have some great artisan ice cream. You may have heard of Salt & Straw? Or perhaps Fifty Licks? Also a couple brands that are available in the grocery stores — Umpqua and Tillamook.
There are two flavors of Tillamook ice cream in my freezer right now — and I will offer some vicariously to you:
Cinnamon Horchata
Scoop yourself a tall, cold glass of horchata, warmed with the sweet spice of Vietnamese cinnamon. Just like the Mexican drink made from rice and milk, our ice cream version is rich, creamy, and smooth. Using milk from cows not treated with artificial growth hormones*, we add extra cream to the mix because more cream equals a richer, better taste. So kick back, swap your straw for a spoon, and enjoy.
I like this flavor with fruit — had some with strawberries last night. It is also good with banana slices and a tablespoon of rum.
Strawberry Lemonade
Of all four seasons, lemonade season is probably our favorite. To celebrate this year, we’ve made a very special batch of lemonade ice cream, brimming with chunks of real, sweet Oregon strawberries. One thing you’ll notice, besides the perfect union of sweet and sour, is that this ice cream isn’t bright yellow the way you might expect. Like all our ice cream, it contains no artificial flavors, colors, sweeteners, or high fructose corn syrup. But unlike most of our flavors, you won’t find this one for long.
This one is just refreshing, all by itself. But the addition of strawberries or raspberries never hurts!
Everyone has their favorite local ice cream. Please share some of yours — and also tell us about your day, your weekend plans and plans for the holiday, and your menus! This is an open thread.
Kitchen Table Kibitzing is a community series for those who wish to share part of the evening around a virtual kitchen table with readers of Daily Kos who aren’t throwing pies at one another. Drop by and tell us about your weather, your garden, or what you cooked for supper. Newcomers may notice that many who post diaries and comments in this series already know one another to some degree, but we welcome guests at our kitchen table, and hope to make some new friends as well. |
