Senator Shelley Capito, Republican of West Virginia—on the reasons for her “no" vote on the Repeal of the Affordable Care Act:
“I did not come to Washington to hurt people,” Ms. Capito said in a statement. “I cannot vote to repeal Obamacare without a replacement plan that addresses my concerns and the needs of West Virginians.
Then you’re in the wrong Party, Senator.
The entire, organized effort to repeal (it’s never been about "repeal and replace") the Affordable Care Act (‘Obamacare") up to this point has been an attempt by the Republican Party to hurt people, for the sole purpose of cutting taxes on the nation’s wealthiest. Hurting people was just a necessary, acceptable part of that plan.
Just look no further than the nasty, vindictive Prick who your Party elected as President:
Trump was prepared to shoulder no blame for the failure of the bill on Tuesday, and warned he would now simply let Obamacare fail.
"We're not going to own it. I'm not going to own it. I can tell you the Republicans are not going to own it. We'll let Obamacare fail and then the Democrats are going to come to us," Trump told reporters at the White House.
“Letting Obamacare fail” means letting people die. Letting sick people go untreated. Letting people’s lives drown in unforgiveable medical debt. It’s not about helping people, it never has been. If it were, your Party would have come up with something in the last seven years that didn’t end up tossing 20-30 million out of their ability to afford health care coverage. That was no “unintended consequence." It was the plan all along. That’s what Trump wants. And that’s what your Party Leadership wants as well.
But thanks, Senator, for spelling out exactly what your party is trying to do.
Not about hurting people? Everything your Republican Party does is about hurting people.
You want to hurt people by suppressing their right to vote. You want to hurt kids and limit their futures by gutting public education. You want to hurt people by allowing polluters to dismantle the EPA and rewrite the laws that keep them from polluting. You want to hurt women by restricting their right to equal pay, to abortion—and now, of all things, contraception. You want to hurt brown people by tearing their families apart and deporting them. You want to hurt Muslims by banning them from travelling. You want to hurt black people by mocking them when they complain about police brutality. You want to hurt college students by coddling rapists on campus. You want to hurt kids by ending funding for the ones with special needs, or voting to allow guns to be carried in their schools. You want to hurt veterans by lying them into unnecessary wars, then cutting their health care and treatment when they get home, all while praising their “sacrifice."
And you save your worst for the poor, because you know they can’t fight back. So you hurt people by cutting off their Medicaid, or you hurt them by voting against a living wage. You hurt them by passing “right-to work” laws that are intended to undercut unions. You hurt them by humiliating them with drug tests so they can get food stamps. You hurt them by passing laws permitting banks to make predatory loans and for-profit colleges to bilk poor young people out of their life’s savings for worthless degrees. You hurt them by arming the mentally ill with handguns and passing laws allowing white bigots to “stand their ground.” You hurt transgender people by forcing them to use the wrong bathrooms. You hurt gays and lesbians by allowing businesses to discriminate against them.
Hell, you even want to hurt wildlife by digging mines our in national monuments, fracking what’s left of our forests and public lands, drilling off our coasts, or just tearing up the Endangered Species Act when it inconveniences your agenda. You want to hurt people by allowing our roads and bridges to collapse. You want to hurt people by taking away money from social services, libraries, ambulance squads, fire companies, or from coastal towns that are desperately trying to stave off the effects of climate change. You want to hurt people by giving corporations massive tax breaks to offshore their labor so wages here can never go up, and then voting to allow them to hide their profits from taxes.
It’s pretty clear that what your party is really good at is hurting people.
They just happened to fail this time.
