I recently got a reminder to come in for a follow-up colonoscopy since it had been 5 years since my last. With the uncertainties about health care and employment, I figured I might as well get this checked out now while I can, because it’s likely I’ll never be able to afford another colonoscopy with or without the ACA.
I had to go to the pharmacy on Monday to get the prep drink mix, and I was shocked to find the pharmacy was packed! Normally there might be about 3-4 people waiting, but this time there were around 6-8! So I dropped off the prescription and picked it up much later. Granted, we are in a small town, and this is the only pharmacy we have, but still, I’ve never seen this size crowd in there before!
The colonoscopy was today, and my Dad drove me since I would be too woozy to drive myself home afterwards. On the way, he stopped off at the pharmacy again so I could drop off one of my Mom’s meds to get refilled. This time, there might have been around 8-10 people waiting!
Then, when we got to the endoscopy center, the waiting room was packed full! Five years ago, when I had my first one there, that waiting room was nowhere near full! When they wheeled me out to the car, my Dad commented how crowded the waiting room was, and I said they must be tired, but he told us it was much busier on Monday!
So I have to wonder if most people are doing the same thing I’m doing, trying to get things checked out and get whatever prescriptions they may need while they still can. Is anyone else seeing these kinds of crowds?
Just to leave on a humorous note, when I was escorted into the room where it was going to be done, they had a radio playing, and I had to smile and tell them the song that was playing was pretty ironic to play during a colonoscopy. It was Men at Work’s “The Land Down Under”.
